Ladies' hockey: Burnham 0, Shepton Mallet 4 BURNHAM Ladies began 2007 on Saturday in atrocious weather conditions with a friendly match that ended in defeat. However, it was a good work-out against higher opposition in preparation for the resumption of their league program this weekend.
With a couple of players missing through illness and others coming back from injury, it was always going to be a stern test, but Burnham played some good passing hockey at times.
Shepton's first two goals were superb, reverse-stick efforts which have keeper Sarah Johnson no chance. She made several top-class saves to keep her team in the game during a largely one-sided first half.
The defence of Emma Smith, Sue Solomon and Tracey Dunn were outstanding and, with the midfield, worked hard to get Burnham into the game. Goal chances were few and a goalmouth scramble led to Shepton's third goal.
Burnham improved massively after the break and Laura Marsh really got into her groove, running at the defence and combining well with Carly Bush to create attacks. She had three good chances, but rustiness and good goalkeeping denied her.
MichelleBoland and Caroline Hunt began to be influential and their positive play rubbed off. Ali Parry worked tirelessly in midfield and the Blues limited Shepton to only one further goal, a short-corner strike which took a wicked deflection off the charging Boland. Player of the match: Tracey Dunn.
Next match: This Saturday v Minehead. Training has resumed on Mondays, 6-7.30pm at King Alfred's. Burnham are sponsored by The Mortgage Shop
